To develop Jitwarpur village of Madhubani as a handicraft hub, an important initiative has been launched. The Government of India has approved the proposal of the Bihar Government’s Industries Department. A budget of ₹10 crore has been sanctioned under the Craft Tourism Village Scheme.
With this, Bihar has now got its first Craft Village. Under the project, roads, houses, and ponds will be beautified at a cost of ₹9,00,20,470. The central government will provide 80% of the funds (₹8,00,20,376) while the Bihar government will contribute 20% (₹1,80,094).
Jitwarpur is world famous for Madhubani (Mithila) painting. There are around 3,500 artists in the village, and most families are engaged in this art.
Bihar’s Industries Minister said that after this decision, Jitwarpur will become an international identity for handicrafts. Once developed as a Craft Village, Jitwarpur will attract tourists from India and abroad, giving the local economy a big boost.
Along with Jitwarpur, craft villages are also being set up in other states such as Muzhaffarnagar (UP), Jagatsinghpur (Odisha), Mahabalipuram (Tamil Nadu), Amer (Rajasthan), Banaras (UP), Naini (UP), and Naggar (Himachal Pradesh).
This step will not only encourage artists but will also generate employment opportunities. With this, Bihar’s cultural heritage will get global recognition, and Mithila painting will reach new heights.
