India Sends Entry of Film Homebound for the Oscar 2026, Based on Friendship; 57 Films Sent So Far, 3 have Reached in Top-5.

The Hindi film Homebound has been selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2026 in the Best International Feature Film category.
The Film Federation of India (FFI) announced the decision after screening 28 shortlisted films. The selection was made by a 17-member jury headed by Anurag Basu.
The Story so far:
The film tells the story of two childhood friends, Sameer and Imtiaz. Sameer aspires to become a police officer to uphold his family’s honor, while Imtiaz struggles against the harsh realities of poverty. Their unbreakable bond is put to the ultimate test as life’s unexpected challenges force them to make difficult choices, revealing the true strength of friendship and resilience.
The Journey so far:
This is India’s 57th Oscar entry in the Best International Feature Film category since 1957. Out of these, three films have reached the Top-5 – Mother India (1957), Salaam Bombay (1988)and Lagaan (2001).Last year, India sent Lapata Ladies as its official entry, but it could not reach the Top-5.
For the 2026 Oscars, films from around 90 countries will compete. About 1,500 entries are expected in this category. The final shortlist will be announced by the Academy in December 2025, and the award ceremony will be held in Los Angeles in March 2026.
